A Sense of Scale

This course is a survey of the widest proportions there are — deep time, big numbers, and the long arc of human health, hunger, violence, and comfort — taught so a student can see where his ordinary Tuesday actually sits in the human story. It covers how short life once was and why the averages mislead (the course teaches the real distribution, never "people used to die at thirty"), how common a child's death was and how fast that changed, the history of hunger, plague, and violence in the aggregate, and the scale of the Earth and the universe. The register is locked to factual: every figure arrives with its range and its conditions in the same sentence, wonder rides on real data rather than adjectives, and the course hands the student the scale, not the verdict — the gratitude is never installed; it earns itself out of accurate numbers.

Each lesson is a focused read built around one number given with its bracket and a worked comparison to the student's own day, followed by a 20-minute reflective write — notice, compare, imagine, never confessional. Auto-graded weekly checks keep the real numbers in memory and two cumulative tests land at the course's arc breaks — the parent grades nothing — and the course closes on a synthesis unit that draws the whole proportion together.
