Citizens in the Making

This course is a reconstruction of how Greece and Rome made their young into citizens — and what that won them, and what it cost when they stopped. It is deliberately not the battle march; wars and political chronology belong to the sister courses History of Greece and History of Rome. This is the bottom-up story: what people ate, who they married, how children were raised, what they believed they owed one another. Lessons open scene-first on a person in a moment — a Roman boy before dawn, a table, a street — and every custom faces the same spine question: did this build these people up, or wear them down? The course admires what these civilizations built without sanitizing slavery, gender, or empire; the honesty is what makes the admiration credible.

Two analytic tools carry the year. The Scale is a recurring judgment exercise — students must name the mechanism by which a custom built people up or sank them, not just apply a label. The Ledger is a year-long two-column project, What Builds a People Up against What Sinks Them, updated after every unit. Each roughly hour-long lesson pairs a reading with parent-led discussion and a Scale warm-up plus Ledger entry; the Greeks and Romans speak on the page throughout — their own historians, statesmen, and moralists, in fresh plain English. A five-minute auto-graded check lands each week and two tests anchor the year: the gradebook fills itself, and the parent has nothing to grade. The arc runs from the Greek polis through Rome's republic, its death, its peace, and its long ruin, then follows the inheritance thread to the American founders. The capstone, A Citizen in the Making, has the student weigh the whole arc on one scale using the full year's ledger.
