Schola Latina

This course is a two-year path from first endings to reading real Latin — not facts about Latin, but the sentences Romans actually wrote. Latin I covers the foundations and the complete indicative system: all five declensions, adjective agreement, every indicative tense in both voices across all four conjugations and the core irregulars, pronouns, the relative clause, and the working case uses. Latin II adds the constructions that unlock real prose — participles and the ablative absolute, indirect statement, the full subjunctive and its clause types, deponents, the gerund and gerundive, conditions — against a reading load that moves deliberately from adapted Latin to authentic authors.

The method is fixed: grammar is taught straight and out loud, then used the same day on connected Latin readings about the Roman world — students never drill a table and close the book. Vocabulary builds at 15–25 high-frequency words per unit, recycled relentlessly, reaching a core of roughly 450–500 words across the sequence; long-vowel macrons stay on through the teaching Latin and are deliberately dropped on Latin II's authentic texts. The payoff arrives on a schedule: by the end of Year One the student reads an adapted Roman story start to finish without a crutch, and Year Two ends in the genuine article — Eutropius, the Vulgate, a sharp poem of Martial's, and a glossed page of Virgil, read in the original.
