Katmai's big draw is bear viewing, best from late June through mid-September, with families needing to attend a mandatory "Bear School" or orientation on safety rules (no food, only water, keeping safe distances) before heading out. Getting there requires a flight (from Anchorage or Homer), and trails like Brooks Falls can close without notice to protect bears with cubs, so build flexibility into your plans; some visitors also hiked Dumpling Mountain or explored on their own when the falls were quiet. This is a multi-day, logistically involved trip best suited for families comfortable with wildlife encounters and remote travel rather than a quick day visit.
