Families like the Island in the Sky area for its short, kid-manageable hikes (Mesa Arch, Aztec Butte, White Rim) plus picnic shelters and scenic overlooks like Shafer Canyon, and several reviewers noted it felt uncrowded and peaceful. Plan on spending a good chunk of a day if you want to stop at multiple overlooks and squeeze in a hike or two, and note the park is huge with a separate Needles district that wasn't covered in most of these visits. Watch for foggy conditions affecting visibility and keep an eye out for cattle crossing the road on the drive in.
