Homeschooling in Alabama
Most Alabama families homeschool through a church-school umbrella, which handles record-keeping. No state-mandated testing exists under any pathway — the grades 3/6/9 testing claim is not in state statute.

Enroll in a church school umbrella
The umbrella files with the local superintendent and maintains your records. No annual state renewal required for parents.

Keep attendance (private-tutor pathway only)
If using the private-tutor pathway instead of an umbrella: 140 days/year, at least 3 hrs/day. Submit a written statement of children, subjects, and schedule to the superintendent each year.

No testing required
No standardized test is mandated under any Alabama pathway. An individual umbrella school may set its own internal policy, but that is not state law.

If you take an ESA: Taking a CHOOSE Act ESA does NOT change your homeschool status — a homeschool student 'even if enrolled in a church school, co-op, or similar entity' stays a regular Alabama homeschooler (Ala. Admin. Code 810-28-1-.01(10)) and CHOOSE adds no testing. 'Participating school' is a separate accredited-school category you do not join.
